Dairying is an important source of subsidiary income to small/marginal farmers and Agricultural labourers and a major income source for large scale entrepreneurs.

White revolution in India has helped India in attaining self sufficiency in milk production and India stands at the top in the world in milk production.
The total Bovine population in India as per the 2019 census is 192.5 million Cattle and 109.9 million Buffaloes.The total milk production in India was 210 million tons for the year 2021-22. The projected demand for milk by 2030 in India is expected to be at 300 million Tons.To achieve this ,growth rate in milk, production has to be increased from present 2.5% rate to 5%.Thus there is a tremendous scope and potential for increasing the milk production through profitable Dairy Farming.

The state of Karnataka has a cattle population of 8469004 & 2984560 Buffaloes (2019 Census) total milk production in Karnataka is 903.15 Cr Kgs per year (2019-20) & Karnataka stands 2™ in the Nation next to Gujarat.

Dairy being an alternative source for subsidiary income,it also provides Quality organic manure for improving soil fertility and crop yields. The gobar gas from the dung is used as fuel for domestic purposes
and also to generate electricity. The surplus fodder and agricultural by-products are gainfully utilized for feeding the animals. Dairy Farming provides employment throughout the year to the unemployed.

A successful Dairy Farming needs forward linkage to milk co operatives, Artificial insemination services,production of quality concentrate feed,health coverage fodder development,technical know how, training etc
